Christopher

Wanting as a self-propagating plant. I think about what I want a lot, tending - perhaps unnecessarily - to something already vital and without need for extra attention. I feel it would be good to know exactly what I do want, but I suppose that’s not really the point in the end. Freedom from desire?

I just read a Chinese proverb posted on Instagram by a Portuguese healer living in Germany. It said “Tension is who you think you should be. Relaxation is who you are.” I screen-shotted it. Google confirmed: it’s true.

A teacher once suggested my mind is like a garden; that I should be careful what ideas I let take root, and to decisively pull out any I don’t want. Gardening is a practice, and weeds are always growing. One doesn’t weed just once a season.

Can I be relaxed while reaching beyond my comfort zone? I suppose the proverb is not qualifying tension and relaxation. So, I will go ahead and be tense sometimes, when I am challenging who I am. What plants have I been tending? Which ones will I decide to stop nurturing? Make some space for something new to grow! That makes me relax and breathe deep. After all, I am not the plants, and yet, that is exactly what I am.

Who am I as a context for ideas to grow in? Nothing isn’t just nothing. There is always a context. What a feat to find nothing. Perhaps it’s the most precious thing; making existence possible for everything. Nothing sounds like God to me. Does nothing even exist?

Next Student Reply

Aubrey

As we exist on this planet, we are simultaneously the watched and the watchers. . We observe the events that happen around us and choose how to respond in the most authentic way we can. At the same time, we are being perceived by the others that happen to spend even the littlest amount of time in our lives. This perception adds another layer to our role as the watchers: meticulously watching ourselves. Even if the perception of others doesn’t directly affect how we perceive ourselves, the long history of what it is like to be a human that is perceived has an unspoken effect on the voices in our heads. I struggle a lot with the reality of being perceived, both by myself and others. The voices in my head, similar to most other people, can be very mean. If I don’t live up to the standards that I have set for myself, standards that have been cultivated over years of unfortunate human history, then I punish myself with harsh words of critique.

Reading this prompt reminded me of a song by an artist named Orla Gartland. The song is called “More Like You” and it documents the feeling of comparing yourself to others. This is something that my brain loves to torture me with. It says “you should look like her, she is what beauty looks like” or “she sings much better than you, maybe you should just quit.” It has taken me a long time to understand these thoughts as something that I shouldn’t put so much importance in. These thoughts are simply my brain’s messed up way of trying to help me strive to improve based on the societal standards that I have internalized during my 21 years on this planet.

Humans are both blessed and cursed with the ability to perceive, but what we can try to do to lessen the cursed effects is reframe our brain. It takes a long time and a lot of work to teach your brain to change its standards, but it’s an important process that I am working very hard to achieve.

Next Student Reply

Adrian

Finding and holding on to Motivation on any aspect of life is important. Things will happen in life where we lose that motivation when we are in that creative process. It is important to find things that motivate us and we can use to help us continuously have motivation. Self doubt is destructive in many ways as it could halt the creative process as well as other aspects of ones life. Motivation triggers behaviors and if you want those positive behaviors factoring in your life than make a change. So think about the things that motivate you to succeed whether it is people, ideas or simply wanting to be successful.

A Last Note:

Remember set goals that you want to accomplish! You can do anything if you are motivated to do it.

Next Student Reply

Life moves fast and if we don't slow down to appreciate the things around us, we will have missed out completely. Life is not about what car you drive nor about what others think of us. Rather, life is about the unexpected hummingbirds we might stumble upon. We need not be concerned with self-doubt, simply use the earth's energy and do your best. Motivation is the most important behavioral topic and finding it is only half the struggle. How we channel what motivates us into action is the other half.

Armelle

A dear friend of mine is going through a divorce and has started gravitating towards reading self help books and receiving daily affirmations from an app called “iam” to get through the days. I tried the app in solidarity but found the affirmations to be a little too saccharine for my taste.

“I am imperfect, but I love and accept all that I am “

“I am going to achieve all of my dreams”

“I will use these hard time to make me a better person”

I opted instead to read The Subtle Art of not Giving an eff by Mark Manson. The inclusion of the expletive in this supposed self help book made it easier on my pallet. In this book, he talks in Chapter 7 about how failure is the way forward, “improvement at anything is based on thousands of tiny failures, and the magnitude of your success is based on how many times you’ve failed at something” (p. 150).

Somewhere along the way we have been afraid of failure or try to avoid it at all costs. Manson suggests changing the value and its metric. Or as you so eloquently put it “deconstruct the concept of failure entirely” and “shift my focus.“

The more you fail, the more likely you are to succeed. Success comes from improvement and improvement comes from failure. Edison tried many prototypes before getting the lightbulb right - and even that is changing today! It's known that Post-it accidentally created a low tack adhesive when trying to find a really strong one.

How many bright ideas (pun intended to light bulb reference) do we now jot down on a note (clap back to post-its) that may or may never “succeed” (whatever that means).

Bring on the failures!

Week 3 Prompt

Next Student Reply

Week 3 Prompt

Next Student Reply

Akyra

“My motivation transforms into the hungry desire to sit on the curb and flip everyone and their elite condescension, one by one, the bird.” This sentence is what I’ve been feeling for a few days. The sheer lack of motivation motivates me to have a slight distaste for everyone, including myself. In those moments, I see any bit of ego and it develops into me rolling my eyes and emptying my mind.
With that said, I want to add a poem. I think writing sentences or essays is for my brain to understand and reply. But when I write poetry, that’s when my heart understands and speaks. Corny, I know.

Seeing you walk in front of me
eyes wide
Dreaming a daydream where time is different
Your fame is immense. being stopped at every staircase
complimented for holding your phone
With complete disregard for your own surroundings
You dress so put together, in contrast to
the rowdy and rugged cuzzins I know you have
Opening the window of night
Moon bright and feet rooted…sunk
Into the uneven concrete
Perfect.
\|Different eyes\|
Not good enough.
The ground flat and filled with people calculating your every move
Feet like air . slightly heeled loafers clacking on the ground
Sun beaming into my glasses
as I await to exist alone
Complete acknowledgement of everything surrounding me
Feeling left out..black sleep -missing home….all rezzy n rugged
The only people who view me in the light of fame encased in glass, phone.
The rush I feel from recognition makes me feel less alone
….but then I remember….
You only see the image of fame
Sick and tired of walking only to feel the loneliness creep in
Closing my eyes
Dreaming a daydream where time is different

\\

Am I understanding now?
Close.

A Last Note:
