To reduce consumption is an important value to me. While it is a lifelong practice I strive towards, I recognize that it comes from a place of privilege and that I have the choice to decide to consume less. This isn't to say that I don't have my fair share of commodities that I have shame or guilt about indulging in. However, I am not interested in being defined by my stuff but I do know that I am not nearly cool enough to have a collection of shoes or nice cars, haha!

I sympathize, being a mother myself, with the struggle you face with your daughter. I hold in high regard what people think of my children. While I know they are their own people, I still believe they are an extension of me and their actions reflect upon me. I am mostly concerned with them being polite (Say thank you. Did you thank your uncle for your birthday gift?) and responsible (Do your chores! Is your homework done?).

I acknowledge your comment that we are all searching for balance. I know I have a lot of work to do.

I remember the three jobs my mom worked to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads. I remember going to my older brother and asking why she was always working and feeling sad that she wasn’t going to be home that night. But I never felt like we were poor till I got older. When I started to feel self-conscious about wearing my sister’s hand-me-downs or inviting friends over to the trailer we lived in. It wasn’t till I was older that I really began to appreciate all the sacrifice my mom made for us growing. The experience I had growing up might not have included a big house or going out every night for dinner or going on vacations during the summer, but it was an experience that I took for granted. It was my story to live and learn to love, it was a story written and filled by the sacrifices and love of my mother. We all have a story to tell all different but they all have lessons to teach us.

I think this is because in my line of work I have to ask it every day. We talk about being selfish, doing the “right thing,” and being better than what we had. Really its all about what we want. The future that we desire that keeps us going. We want our children to be better than what we had not because we had bad lives but because we want them to be successful and to continue the success. Finding the why everyday can be superficial or deep. Just keep trying to find it.

It is the feeling of getting your hair done early in the morning
Pulling and stretching
Tears falling down your face but ribbons and plastic ball chongos make it better
Colorful
Distracting

I think of my existence, my culture
Where was I really from
Vivid colors and a storm approaching
I'm on my homeland, at least half, or half of half

Thinking about what it would be like if my ancestors continued their legacies

Strawberry picking
My grandmother was a farmworker since she was about six years old

I think of my ancestors and the future generations
My dad being in AIM and the brown berets
Carrying on the legacy
Dedicating my life to the betterment of the future generations
Beating heart
Being red, being brown, being white
I’m screaming the echoes of distant drum songs
Riding the rain clouds to a river

This is my motherland you’re walking on
The red dirt shows our skin and our blood
Still new, colonization still here
Racialized into oblivion

Also shares her heart
Listen to her when she says

As i read this week's prompt i couldn't help but to think about this song by RM of BTS. in this song he says,

“Oh, tell me that dark could never win the light
Oh, tell me that wrong could never win the right
Baby, tell me that we gon' someday stop the fight
And tell me that every, everything gon' be alright
Oh tell me who's stupid, baby, is it me or them?
Just tell me who's insane, baby, is it me or them?
In this crazy world after patience, could we get the pearl?
But this world, which teaches me, preaches me how to curl”

I think this fits well with this week because, to me, this first part is talking about the same Rose is. Am i stupid for wanting things I do not have?
Am I insane for thinking I can be like everyone else? Later in the song he also says,

“I see progress via my daughter's eyes
I think I think too much now and drink too much now
I numb it 'cause I don't wanna cry
Prayin' for better place for you and II see some grass growin' in winter's eyes
I think I think too much now and drink too much now
To numb it 'cause I don't wanna die”

I feel like this is a goal for a lot of us. For my mother, she wanted us to have a better life than she did, that's why she came to the US. i've always have thought that when i have children of my own, they'll have a better life than i did and i can see the same thing is true for my sister and her kids

I never realized this due in part because that is what I thought was normal. However now that I am older I can see and acknowledge the things that were apart of my life because of how privilege I was. This helped to see and understand some of the hardships that other people are facing and have faced in this world. I was very fortunate to have grown up the way that I have. I can say that it has made me more empathetic. Even though I will never experience some of the things that other individuals have I do feel a sense of empathy for what they are going though. Growing up with hardships has it disadvantages but I can see that it also builds resilience and makes people stronger.
